Making an NFL Preseason Gamble on Carolina

The Carolina Panthers is a challenging NFL football pick to determine with an NFL preseason bet.

Will this year’s Panthers be much better in live football odds or will they be one more .500 team? The Panthers are underdogs in NFL preseason odds to win the Super Bowl at 44-1.

Carolina is listed as 6-1 by the NFL preseason betting numbers to win the NFC South behind New Orleans and Atlanta. The Panthers take on four great squads, so they may have some value in the preseason. They open up at Baltimore on August 12th in an ESPN televised game. After that, they host the New York Jets in Week 2 and the Tennessee Titans in Week 3 before finishing up at Pittsburgh in their last preseason competition.

Carolina can be a exciting squad to follow as they’ve got a great rushing duo of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. They did not play lots of defense though and it may not get any better without leading defensive end Julius Peppers who is now in Chicago.

The Panthers will depend on Williams and Stewart again in 2010 but to be successful they need quarterback Matt Moore to play well. Carolina was a risk when he did that late last season. The Panthers have a great receiver in Steve Smith but not a lot of choices around him. The Carolina Panthers may turn the offense over to Jimmy Clausen, who they got in the NFL Draft, if Moore cannot replicate the success he had last season. The Panthers are still going to run the ball since they have a excellent offensive line and two pretty good running backs.

The Carolina defense is likely to have difficulty. They weren’t quite good a year ago and they are going to be without their top competitor, linebacker Thomas Davis, who tore his ACL in June. The Carolina Panthers are going to have difficulty stopping other teams without Davis and Peppers. The Carolina Panthers basically can not replace Davis, who was just excellent a year ago.

The Carolina Panthers almost certainly don’t have the defense to stop New Orleans and Atlanta, even though they have enough skill to contend in the NFC South, which means they’re destined for 3rd place. The Panthers might have a little value in NFL preseason probabilities though, particularly if Clausen plays well as the backup quarterback.

The Panthers franchise has just been in the league for fifteen years, being set up and joining the NFL as an expansion team in 1995. At this point they have gathered a record of 115-121, which is not the type of track record your average NFL betting buff is going to want to take a chance on. However, maybe this is a possibly excellent squad who requires a handful of years to find their stride, given that they did manage to make an appearance in 2004’s Super Bowl.

The Panthers started off with a 0-3 deficit last season. They managed to make that into an even 8-8 record, but that’s still not the kind of performance that a squad is going to expect from itself. There’s still a chance for the Carolina Panthers to become contenders in the 2010-11 NFL season, but that will depend on a better performance from its participants.
